Mouths

Alex Ellerton - Lockjaw (blender rendering)

A lot of Alex’s pieces focus on the mouth, as one of the major sites of physical breakdown between external and internal body. Both sexually, and as part of the digestion process, the mouth is an image we immediately associate with both the pleasant and unpleasant, a line Alex toys often in his practice. Both ‘Lockjaw’ and ‘Silver Teeth’ focus on the jaw and the teeth, as the solid parts of the mouth. Changing the texture of them, whether into a rubbery substance or a solid metal, creates a visceral reaction in the viewer as we immediately run our tongue across our own teeth to check they’re still as we left them.

‘Open Your Mouth’, a vanitas inspired piece, creates a still life out of the mouth and its fellow shapes and objects. A deconstruction of the internal body centred around the opening of the digestive system, ‘Open Your Mouth’ lays it all on the table, literally.
