Freaky Deeks was a queer art collective Ellie, Shawn and Alex were all a part of. Exploring gender, body, sexuality, and the grotesque all with a hint of campness, the group’s performances and artworks worked to create collaborations that incorporated everyone’s practice. The group’s first performance together, and first performance ever for Ellie and Alex, was part of queer cabaret Fruit Salad’s first show. Beginning as two 50s housewives serving dinner in a most traditional performance of gender norms, it would quickly begin to unravel as clothes came off and food was smashed, spread and smeared across body and stage. The end result was a grotesque club night dancefloor of chocolate gateau, mayonnaise and semi-nude artists. The piece has continued to inspire later performances and works by the artists involved, and is still a solid favourite of the groups’ repertoire.
