Spinsters

‘Spinsters’ was a performative runway, featuring in the Byker Arts Festival of August 2023. With crochet works from Adele and fellow weaver Toi Guy (@toitoi_tejidos), the pieces and the performance were designed to bring you into a fast-paced display of the slow-moving medium of crochet. Playing on the term ‘spinster’ in its original use as a woman who was skilled at spinning, and in its more modern use as referring to an unmarried woman to tackle the misogyny and resultant loss of self-sufficiency when it comes to traditional practices. Performers walked down the runway each to a different song that paired with the style of their outfit. The floral piece modelled by Ellie leant much more into the folklore influence of ‘Spinsters’, while Oluchi (@earthgirloluchi) floated down the runway to a more whimsical piece. Both Adele and Shawn’s performances steered into heavier and eerier tones as the antithesis of this. The weaving of crochet to costume to music to performance in ‘Spinsters’reflects too the web of multi-mediums and multi-influences that lie behind the artists and their practice. No one medium nor artist works entirely on its own, reflecting the layered ways of working in the complex world built in pieces like this.
