Patterns

Adele Clifford - White line pattern (pencil, A4)

Adele has multiple sketchbooks filled with the kinds of patterns and sketches seen in this archive. Artworks in their own right, these pieces remain largely private. Instead, they are an important creative outlet in Adele’s practice, allowing her to engage with art in a way that is judgment free, low effort and accessible.

These patterns and sketches also inform a large part of Adele’s public facing practice. The shapes, colour schemes and ideas seen in her sketchbooks carry across into her larger-scale works.

From spirituality, ecosystems and the natural world, and folklore imagery, these sketchbooks are the behind the scenes of her public art practice. Some of these sketches, like ‘Heart Pattern’ and ‘Layered Pattern’, are more generally part of her practice. But some works link much more closely.

‘Sun and earth sketch’ links most closely to the importance of sustainability, and to our connection to the earth, in Adele’s practice. Her time spent on the Alto Art Residency in Brazil introduced a number of flora, fauna and wildlife to her artistic output.
